Plover publishes a limited number of fiction titles. A novel has to be very special to be taken on. We are interested in work involving more complex relationships, layered plotting and excellent writing. Our main focus is on contemporary fiction which can be placed in the middle range, somewhere between genre and literary fiction. Length should be between 80,000 and 110,000 words.

If you would like us to consider your work please send the following with a covering letter giving us some information about yourself and your writing history:

  • The first three chapters (or first 50 pages to a natural break, whichever is shorter) of your novel, including a cover sheet. Material should be typed in double line-spacing in a clear font and on one side of the paper only. Each page should have a header in one corner, giving "Author name/Title".
  • A brief synopsis (no more than one side of an A4 sheet, single spaced) encapsulating the whole book, including the ending. This is NOT a blurb.
  • Sufficient return postage AND packing if you would like us to return your sample material.
  • Include clear contact details - address, phone and e-mail.
  • Put your name and address on the cover sheet AND on the last page of your typescript. Also put the approximate number of words (to the nearest 500) on the cover sheet.

Please be patient! We will try to respond within three months. Don't ask to speak to an editor about your book. Prospective readers don't want to know why you think your book is wonderful! It has to stand on its own merits.

We do not publish science fiction, fantasy, horror, category romance, children's fiction, short stories or poetry. Hard copy submissions only. We do not accept e-mailed or disk submissions of work.

NEVER send the only copy of your work. While every care is taken of submitted material, we cannot guarantee its safety.
